Town protected by society for 75 years ; Group attempts to preserve Billericay's unique character [Edition 4]

PROTECTING the heritage of Billericay is a huge task - one thisgroup has taken on for the last 75 years.

The Billericay Society began life in 1935, with the original nameof the Billericay Area Group of the Essex Branch of the Council forthe Preservation of Rural England.

In 1972 it took on its current, much shorter name and carried onwith the aim of looking after Billericay's history and preservingthe nature of the town.

Chairman David Bremner said: "We've made some achievements overthe years. Our most visible contribution are the signs we helpedcreate for the roads leading into town.
