Fed: Animal slaughter numbers fall as drought breaks: ABS
CANBERRA, April 3 AAP - A break in the weather has cut the number of animals beingsent to slaughter, new figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show.
The bureau's monthly livestock slaughter figures showed a fall in the number of cattleand sheep sent to abattoirs.
Beef production fell to 166,297 tonnes seasonally adjusted after pushing the 190,000tonne mark for the past few months.
The trend estimate for cattle slaughterings dropped for the third consecutive month,after 10 months of increases.
"(It's) due mainly to seasonal factors and widespread rains across eastern and centralAustralia," the bureau said.
Mutton production fell to 22,700 tonnes, the lowest monthly figure since April 1989,on the back of a slaughter of 1.1 million sheep.
The lamb slaughter remains strong at 1.5 million seasonally adjusted, producing 30,072tonnes of meat.
Pig slaughter figures remained constant at 490,500, producing 36,600 tonnes.
