NSW: Fed/state arrangements wasting $2 bln on health

A leading health expert says more than $2 billion a year is being wasted in healthcare because of poor planning and integration between state and federal governments.

The head of medicine at Sydney's Prince of Wales Hospital, JOHN DWYER, says Australiangovernments need to address health care delivery on a national basis, as they have donewith terrorism and water.

Professor DWYER says Australia's system of health care is dysfunctional and wasteful.

He says $2 billion a year could be saved by an integration between the federal andstate governments on health care, to help stop doubling-up in the system.

Professor DWYER says the federal government should sit down with the state governmentsand plan the number of hospital beds, hostel beds and nursing home beds needed.
