Incumbent telco Vietnam Post and Telecommunication Corporation (VNPT) plans to build $200m high-capacity submarine optical cable for broadcasting, data, Internet, voice and media services. Stretching more than 2,200 km--including 2,034 km under the sea--new cable will connect the northern and southern parts of Vietnam. Project is third of its kind for state-owned VNPT which already operates two submarine optical cables. First cable links Vietnam with Thailand and Hong Kong, second connects Europe and Asia. New cable is expected to be operational by March 2008.
VNPT forecasts total Vietnamese telecommunications output to reach 1,513m minutes a year and Internet users to rise to 16.5m by 2010.
